Memories of Maple

What can be more iconic to Canada than maple?

Whenever my family went abroad and visited distant relatives and friends, we would often bring along with us two things that "screamed" Canada: Niagara icewine and, of course, maple syrup.

I LOVE maple syrup. Growing up, we only had maple syrup in the household, so it was the only way I knew how to eat my pancakes. Disappointment would be written on my face if we ended up at a restaurant for breakfast with none of the real stuff in sight.

A Taste of Spring

April showers. Tree buds. Tulips. Daffodils. Warmer weather. Longer days.

Asparagus. Peas. Fiddleheads.

Spring lamb. Rhubarb.

All of these come to mind when I think of spring.

Toronto Bakes for Japan: Apr. 9-10

Three weeks ago today, Mother Nature gave the world a stark reminder that she spares no one, regardless of class, age, race, or any other factor. We are all at her mercy. It also served as a reminder that as a civilization as a whole, we need to stand together and help one another. Because if the situation were reversed, we hope that the world will do the same for us.

It has been devastating watching the images from the last three weeks. Whole towns wiped out. Family members desperately searching for their loved ones. The Japan earthquake and tsunami, like many other disasters in the past, brought things into perspective and reminded me once again of how incredibly lucky I am.
