Battle Kimchi! at Yakitori Bar

I love kimchi. But that wasn’t always the case. I never used to be able to stand the stuff until a trip to Seoul in 2006 changed my perspective and I realized that I've been eating such crappy stuff, it didn't deserve to be called kimchi. In Seoul, I was introduced to “real” kimchi—the good stuff that Korean ahjummas lovingly make on a regular basis, secret recipes passed down from generations ago. I also had a chance to attend a kimchi-making class while there and came out with a greater appreciation for this wonderful food afterwards. From that moment, I was instantly converted into a kimchi-lover and have never looked back.

Sang Kim's Kick Ass Kimchi

So when I received an invitation to check out a kimchi throwdown, I knew this event was calling my name. On Saturday, February 23, Sang Kim, owner and operator of Seoul Food Co. and Yakitori Bar hosted the first ever Battle Kimchi. Six contestants were culled from the vast Korean community to present their secret kimchi family recipes to an eager crowd and a panel of judges. The prize—the winner will have their kimchi available for sale at Seoul Food Co., alongside Sang’s own Kick Ass Kimchi, starting in March.

Lunar New Year Cookies

Lunar New Year-Themed Cookies

Gong hei fat choy! It's hard to believe that another year has flown by, and we are now ringing in a new year. But I guess the days do fly by when you're having a delicious time. The Lunar New Year is the most important holiday in the Chinese calendar, and like most holidays in any culture, it revolves around food. Last year I thought it would be fun to make some Lunar New Year-themed treats for the occasion, and I had so much fun making them that I came back with a trio of Lunar New Year-themed cookies this time to ring in the Year of the Snake.

Spicy Peanut Yakisoba

A busy work schedule has kept me for the most part out of the kitchen lately. So when I finally had an evening to step into my kitchen again, I was craving something home-cooked and healthy.

Yakisoba—literally “fried noodles in sauce”—is an incredibly quick and easy dish to throw together. As long as you have some soba noodles lying around, your favourite vegetables and protein, and some creativity with the sauce, you are good to go.

Momofuku's Spicy Pork Sausage & Rice Cakes

Ddeok, Korean rice cakes, are commonly found in a cheap and popular street snack in South Korea known as ddeokbokki. Made from glutinous rice flour, tubular pieces of ddeok float in a red, spicy sauce, either on its own or with vegetables or fried fish cakes. It's a dish that I've tried, and wasn't a big fan of. To me, the dish felt bland because after a few bites, all my mouth could taste (and feel) was heat, heat, and more heat!

So when I saw this recipe for Spicy Pork Sausage and Rice Cakes with Chinese Broccoli and Crispy Shallots in the Momofuku cookbook, I was eager to give it a try. And it did not disappoint.

1-2-3-4 Spareribs

I haven't had a chance to cook much lately, but with a long weekend before me, I finally had the chance to get into the kitchen and play around with a few recipes. After a whole day of baking, I wanted to make something quick and easy for dinner, and this recipe instantly came to mind.
