Blood Orange Macarons with Orange Bitters Buttercream

I picked up some beautiful blood oranges from the market a few weeks ago, and in my continued love and fascination for macarons, was inspired to make Blood Orange Macarons (with BraveTart's macarons acting as a creative muse).

Blood Orange Macarons

I attempted to make these a few weeks ago but failed, so I’m delighted that my second attempt turned out beautifully. The recipe I used is an adaptation of the one I often turn to from I Love Macarons by Hisako Ogita. The juice of a blood orange was boiled down to a concentrated syrup, which went into flavouring the macaron batter with some zest. Powdered food colouring was used to give the macarons shells their gorgeous salmon pink hue.

Lunar New Year Cookies

Lunar New Year-Themed Cookies

Gong hei fat choy! It's hard to believe that another year has flown by, and we are now ringing in a new year. But I guess the days do fly by when you're having a delicious time. The Lunar New Year is the most important holiday in the Chinese calendar, and like most holidays in any culture, it revolves around food. Last year I thought it would be fun to make some Lunar New Year-themed treats for the occasion, and I had so much fun making them that I came back with a trio of Lunar New Year-themed cookies this time to ring in the Year of the Snake.

My First Ever Macarons

If everyone isn't talking about cupcakes, then they're probably talking about that other "it" sweet treat—the classic French macaron. Over the past few years, I've noticed quite a few bakeries and patisseries that have popped up around the city, offering these delectable, delicate French confections.

I appreciate a good macaron—crispy exterior, chewy interior, and light, fluffy buttercream or decadent ganache to pull all the flavours together. I've been missing my favourite macarons ever since Lemon Tree Patisserie went on an indefinite hiatus, so I thought this was as good a time as any to finally take on the first of my food goals I had set out for myself earlier this year.
